A successful, sustainable dual language program depends on many key components. One essential component is strong leadership, therefore, leadership at all levels must be knowledgeable about the program and its benefits, actively involved in leading the program, and committed to the overall success of the model. This course will connect research to practice: it offers information and tools to help instructional leaders develop a strong understanding of the benefits of dual language and explores how to lead a program that fosters the development of bilingualism, biliteracy and academic achievement in both program languages. Each component of this course will engage participants in authentic and practical learning experiences designed to support a high quality dual language program at their site. The course will begin with participants increasing their knowledge base of effective programming based on seven research based strands of effective dual language programming. Participants will be actively engaged in knowledge building activities, embedded planning and application to their particular setting while collaborating with their colleagues to determine next steps for strengthening their program.
For those participants seeking Administrator Academy credit, participants will create a plan that:
-develops a strong school culture to elevate the target language and acknowledges the diversity of their student body through an asset-based lens
-ensures that the master building schedule reflects best practice instruction and is aligned to the program
-language and content allocation allowing for effective biliteracy instruction
-aligns collaboration and co-planning between dual language and general education classrooms
-increases their visibility in the dual language classrooms through learning walks alongside the Director of Multicultural programs
-uses the data collected from the learning walks, develops a plan for job-embedded support and professional development for their dual language staff
-identifies how to effectively analyze dual language student data to ensure proper support and intervention is in place
-collaboratively aligns all building tasks listed in the plan with the district Director of Multilingual Programs to ensure shared leadership
All participants will need a copy of their districts' dual language program structure, including language and content allocation plan. Additionally, participants seeking approval will submit their plan to the Director of Multilingual Programs to ensure compliance and receive feedback and support. Optional: Participants will have the opportunity to schedule a virtual feedback session with the course provider for additional feedback and support.
Refunds will be issued only to participants who call the ROE seven (7) business days before the start date of the program or if the program is cancelled. Additionally, within this seven (7) business day period, registrations are non-transferable and may not be applied to a different program or a later offering.
