The active shooter exercise will put educators in a classroom setting when an active shooter comes into the school. The educators will learn how to recognize when an active shooter is in the building, what steps to take to protect themselves and students from the active shooter, witness how law enforcement searches for the active shooter and makes the building safe and how fire/rescue personnel treat and transport victims. In the afternoon educators will hear from speakers as they share their experiences.
There are two different theories of how best to protect students and staff. Participants who choose to attend the Herget Middle School exercise will learn the techniques associated with the ALYCE teaching method that focuses on making informed decisions and evacuating safely to get away from the threat.
Simulated gunfire and simulated gunshot victims will be utilized to provide a realistic scenario during the drill portion of the program. While the drill will provide real world experiences for both educators and public safety personnel, the intensity of the drill may be very emotional and stressful to some individuals. There will be mental health professionals at each site for those who may want to discuss their feeling after the drill.
