Privacy of student data and the security of data, systems and devices are issues that are beginning to have very real impacts on use of technology in schools. As technology use becomes increasingly essential for teaching, learning, communications and assessment, service interruptions that may have been tolerable just a few years ago can have a significant negative impact on education and are no longer acceptable. While protecting the privacy of student data is critical, so too is securing IT systems and devices. Participants in the workshop will learn and discuss the various types of data privacy and security issues that schools face, as well as strategies for addressing them. Resources that can help school system technology leaders address privacy and security issues will be presented. These will include, but not be limited to CoSN's Protecting Privacy in Connected Learning toolkit. The workshop will be interactive with table discussions and exercises to ensure peer-to-peer learning.
